70th Anniversary of Auschwitz Liberation
The commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Auschwitz liberation was an opportunity for our residents, many who are survivors, to personally respect the event , share their experiences and participate actively in the program. Prof. Bernard Rechter spoke about the history of that time, and about the world’s response to the Shoah over the decades. Emmy Monash Apartment resident, Vera Freidin, delivered a moving story of hope, forgiveness , the strength of the generations who have followed and the need to always remember.
Our survivors then came up to individually light Candles of Remembrance, honouring eternal life of those lost, followed by an emotional recitation of the prayers Kel Maleh Rachamim and Kaddish by resident Josef Rewinson . The commemoration ended on a positive note of strength and courage with the Partisan’s song followed by the proud and unified singing of Hatikvah.
